A MESSAGE FROM THE SCPA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear SCPA Family,

It’s with mixed emotion that I share this news with you (also, see CPS Press Release below, and Enquirer article link:) On September 3rd, the Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) Board of Trustees voted to select me to become the next president of NMC, effective January 1, 2020.

Obviously, it’s with great excitement that I say ‘yes’ to this new beginning. And, at the same time, I have a feeling of loss with the ending of my time serving the mission of SCPA. The SCPA Family has worked passionately and relentlessly during the past five years, as we’ve pursued our vision of artistic and academic excellence, executing our Strategic Plan 2020. Between now and the end of December, I will be working together with CPS and the SCPA Fund to ensure a smooth transition. And, most of all, ensuring that SCPA’s Leadership Team, Teachers/Staff, Parents, Alumni, Donors/Funders, and Partners are positioned and supported to continue the work of enabling student success.

Of course, we’ll plan to say farewells in December. As for now – let’s continue doing the work we began, together!

Nick

ALUMNI OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT: CAMRYN MORROW

The Alumni Spotlight for October 2019 is Camryn Morrow. Camryn, who studied creative writing at SCPA wanted to find a way to continue practicing this passion in college. So, she founded a website, Sister Outsiders, which is a storytelling platform for women on campus to share their writings, poems and more. Camryn “hopes to create a sisterhood by exploring the complexities of identity and embracing the similarities and differences among women, by using storytelling as a form of protest and a tool for change.

Check out the article written about Camryn’s Success!

SCPA NEWS AND EVENTS!
Supporting SCPA and all the current events and achievements made by Students and Staff in Arts and Academics.

SINGER ANDY GRAMMER HOST PERFORMANCE AND Q/A AT SCPA

The 7th -12th Grade students at SCPA got a treat on September 25th when Grammy Award Winning Singer, Andy Grammer came by to perform and host a Q&A with the next generation of artists! Grammer already in town to perform that night at Bogarts was brought to SCPA in part by Q102! The students and staff in attendance where so excited and asked many insightful questions!

SCPA TEACHER BRINGING THE WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM

SCPA teacher Ms. Dawnetta Hayes is literally going to the ends of the earth for her students. In October she will be travelling to the Galapagos Islands!

Ms. Hayes has earned a coveted National Geographic Teacher Fellowship. This is her second time earning such a prestigious fellowship with the National Geographic Society. Back in 2015 she travelled on a 15-day expedition to the British and Irish Isles on a National Geographic ship, selected from 1300 applicants.

Why does she do it? Ms. Hayes said, “What I value more than anything is ensuring that my students are exposed to the world and the people around them. Whether this be via my travels or taking students on field experiences in the great outdoors. I want them to know that their world is larger than their neighborhood, and their future is brighter than their current circumstance.”

SCPA TEACHER RECEIVES AWARD

The Cincinnati City Council honored a teacher and labor leader who has made a significant contribution to our City … and the recipient of the formal city resolution is SCPA teacher, Jane Simon. Jane is the longest standing active teacher in the CPS District, and Political Committee Chairwoman for the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers. But, as Mayor Cranley and Council Member P.G. Sittenfeld said, its Jane’s big heart that is most appreciated. Given how many of Jane’s colleagues and students’ parents filled City Hall, it’s obvious that Jane’s deep sense of care for others is very much appreciated.
