ALUMNI BRAVO!

‘The Official Alumni Newsletter, where we connect you with news and updates from The National Alumni Association of The Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts.’

March 2019

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI BOARD PRESIDENT!
BECOME AN OFFICIAL MEMBER OF OUR ASSOCIATION AND EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF HOME!

Dear fellow alumni,

I want to begin by thanking you. Thank you for placing your trust in me by electing me to the board last year. I am also humbled to have been elected as president of the board for 2019. I take this role seriously and will execute it with careful stewardship.

I am pleased to announce our theme for the year: Home. In all that we do, we want to recognize SCPA as a place we all consider to be our home.

The inspiration for our theme this year comes from the song of the same name from The Wiz, a production the school has done many times, a production that has significant meaning to all who know it. As alumni, we want to capture the magic we felt during our time as SCPA students. With this theme, we want to convey you are always welcome, because SCPA will always be our home.

\You have multiple options to connect with your fellow alumni:

  • Sign up on our registry to receive emails, event dates and bulletins at https://scpaalumni.org

  • Volunteer at events throughout the school year. You can receive information about volunteer opportunities by emailing us at info@scpaalumni.org.

  • Donate your time and talent by serving on one of our alumni committees. This will not only give you the opportunity to give back; it will help you connect with other alumni in a fun atmosphere. Email info@scpaalumni.org to sign up or get more information.

Here is a list of current committees that need additional volunteers.

I hope you will consider one of these options this year and becoming a full Alumni Member. Every alumnus/alumna I speak with tells me they want to give back to the school.  By participating in one, two or three of these options is a great way to do this.

We will be sending more information regarding initiatives that you will have the opportunity to support this year. Your support will help build our family and assist us bringing all of us Home.

Sincerely,

Will Hammelrath

President

ALUMNI MARCH SPOTLIGHT: BRIA HOWARD
This months Alumni spotlight goes out to Bria Howard, an SCPA class of 2011 Instrumental Music alum, and now a well known local baker. Bria owns her own dessert service called Sweet as “Bea”.

Sweet as “Bea” Desserts is a black owned home based bakery located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bria Howard, Owner and CEO, was initially inspired to start the home base business as a high-school student after the passing of her cousin, Malcolm, whose dream was to become a pastry chef. The name of the business is a tribute to her great grandmother whom she never had the opportunity to meet but was an awesome baker in her own right.

Sweet as “Bea” Desserts was relaunched in January 2015 when Bria returned home after completing her Bachelors Degree in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Marketing from Bowling Green University (Ohio). “It started with a request to make a cake for a friend and a post on Facebook” Bria states. “I still work a full time job as a retail manager but baking is my superpower. I love seeing the vision of my clients come to life.” Since the start of the business, Bria’s creativity continues to soar. What started with cupcakes and simple cake designs has now flourished into beautifully decorated cakes of all kinds. Bria can take anyone’s vision and turn it into a specialized cake or cupcakes designed for the perfect occasion. From children’s themed birthday parties to lavish weddings, the desserts are delicious and customized for any event.

Sweet as “Bea” Desserts’ mission is to provide customized and flavorful cakes and treats that brings forth the vision of each client.

Bria Says: “SCPA has helped me with my business in a lot of ways I didn’t even think about. I use to bring cakes and cupcakes for all my friends to try if I came up with a new recipe (They loved it). My teachers helped me with business plans and encouraged me though every step of the way.”

Bria hopes to one day grow Sweet as “Bea” Desserts into a full service bakery where she can serve her Cincinnati community.

Sweet as “Bea” Desserts can be reached by Facebook, email, call or text.
